A couple of years back, I started diversifying my reads by getting into clean fantasy romance books.

Clean fantasy romance books are often known as young adult fantasy romance books. Although it has been a genre readers are familiar with, clean fantasy romance is gaining popularity because not everybody wants to read spicy fantasy romance books.

These fantasy romance books without spice typically features characters that are in their teens to early twenties. However, clean fantasy romance books can also be enjoyed by adult readers.

Don’t underestimate a good young adult romantasy! Despite it’s lack of spice, it’s still full or witty banter, playful flirting and heart-warming moments that’ll make you swoon.

1. Daughter of The Moon Goddess by Sue Lyn Tan

Daughter of The Moon Goddess is inspired by Chinese mythology – the story of Chang’e and Houyi.

Many of you would know this story as the reason why many Chinese people celebrate the mid-autumn festival.

The plot focuses around their daughter, Xingyin who is determined to free her mother, (Chang’e – the moon goddess) that is bound to the moon.

With intricate world-building, relatable characters, a brewing romance plus an enticing plot, this book stirs the deepest of emotions within us.

2. Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross

Divine Rivals is a clean romance fantasy novel following Iris Winnow, a writer who works for the local paper.

Her brother has gone to war, initiated by the gods and her grieving mother has quit her job. Iris has no choice but to compete for the columnist position at the local paper to support her family.

However, in her way stands Roman Kitt, a young and dashing man who is also competing for the same position.

The two cannot stand each other, but soon Roman finds out that the mysterious women he has been writing letters to is no other than Iris.

3. Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim

Six Crimson Cranes takes us through a story revolving around Princess Shiori and her six brothers trying to break a curse that was put on them by their stepmother, causing her brothers to turn into, you guessed it – crimson cranes.

This book is also a retelling of a fantasy tale called – The Wild Swans. Shiori has to break the curse but the catch is, she’s not allowed to utter a word. If she speaks, her brothers will die.

If you like a book with a strong female protagonist and a brewing romance, this book will be fun to read.

4. Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

Clockwork Angel is the first book in a YA fantasy trilogy with plenty of romance.

It’s about Tessa, an American girl who travels to Victorian London in search of her brother.

When she arrives, she finds herself pulled into a shadowy underworld full of magical creatures, captivated by two boys that she meets.

5. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

If you are looking for an enemies to lovers romance, you will like The Cruel Prince.

This is the first book in a very popular YA fantasy series. Jude is a human girl who has been raised in the faerie world, requiring her to be cutthroat and cunning in order to survive.

She hates the youngest faerie prince Cardan, who makes her life miserable.

But in a twist of fate, their paths cross and they find they might not hate each other so much after all.

If you’re a big fan of the enemies-to-lovers trope, you’ll love Jude and Cardan’s relationship dynamic. One of the best fantasy enemies to lovers books I’ve ever read!

6. Caraval by Stephanie Garber

If you are looking for a whimsical and romantic fantasy series, you will love Caraval.

This is the first book in a YA fantasy trilogy following two sisters, Scarlett and Tella, who receive an invitation to the mysterious Caraval, a once-a-year competition where the audience become performers in an elaborate show.

7. What The River Knows by Isabel Ibanez

What The River Knows is one of the best magic fantasy romance books without spice.

Set in 1800s, the book follows Inez, a young Argentinian girl who finds out that her parents has passed away in Egypt during one of their excavation trips. She sets off on a journey to Egypt, to confront her archeologist uncle and to unveil the mystery of her parent’s death.

In her way stands her uncle’s assistant, a handsome young British man who will do anything to ship her back to Argentina.

If you’re looking for an enemies to lovers cozy romantasy rich in Egypt history and a bit of mythology, this clean fantasy read is for you!

8. A Fragile Enchantment by Allison Saft

A Fragile Enchantment is a clean regency romance with some fantasy to it. The perfect hybrid for fans of Bridgerton and fantasy readers.

Set in New Orleans in the 19th century, The Beautiful is a YA fantasy book filled with romance.

It’s about Celine, a girl who has left her home in Paris after a scandal for a fresh start in New Orleans.

But soon she finds herself pulled into a dark and alluring magical underworld, ruled by the enigmatic Sébastien.

14. These Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan

If you like romances involving faeries, you will love These Hollow Vows.
